Young Farmer Revives Scottish Tradition at Omarama Station Muster

In a unique celebration of heritage, trainee farmer Jack Boon is reviving Scottish traditions at the annual sheep muster held at Omarama Station in New Zealand’s North Otago region. As glider pilots soar above the picturesque high country later this month, they may hear the stirring sounds of bagpipes resonating from the station’s crags. Boon, dressed in a traditional tartan kilt, will perform pieces such as “Scotland The Brave” and “The Rowan Tree,” marking a ceremonial gathering of shepherds and their dogs.

The muster is an essential event for local farmers, signifying the preparation for winter as thousands of merino ewes are rounded up. This year, the muster will take place in late August 2023, and Boon is set to play the bagpipes once again. His involvement in the ceremony began in April 2023, during his first muster, where he played to energize the working dogs before a week-long effort to herd the sheep across the expansive 12,000-hectare station.

Tradition plays a significant role in the high country lifestyle, and the ceremonial “bark up” serves to excite the dogs and set a spirited tone for the day ahead.
