Invercargill Stadium celebrated its 25th anniversary with a vibrant community event that showcased the facility’s significance to local residents. The stadium, which has provided a diverse range of activities since its opening, has become a cornerstone for sports, entertainment, and community gatherings.

The celebration featured various activities appealing to all ages, including live entertainment on the Court One stage, bouncy castles, and games like pickleball and roller derby. Jo Hutton, a long-time supporter of the stadium, reflected on its journey and the community’s resilience following the catastrophic event in 2010, when a heavy snowstorm caused the roof to collapse. “Community leaders made good from bad and rebuilt something better than what had been lost,” Hutton stated.

Community Engagement and Attendance

Hutton highlighted the stadium’s versatility, noting that it caters to both elite sports teams and families. In 2024, the venue welcomed over 490,000 visitors, and Hutton anticipates an increase in attendance for 2025. Major events like the Polyfest, which attracted 50,000 attendees over five days, exemplify the stadium’s capability to host large crowds. “Nowhere else can handle these numbers,” she emphasized.

The stadium’s annual Christmas show has garnered acclaim, with Hutton comparing its quality to a West End performance. She credited the operational teams for their dedication and adaptability, which often involves overnight transformations of the venue for different events. “You come back in the morning and it is like the fairies have been in,” she remarked.

Future Prospects and Support

Looking ahead, Hutton stressed the importance of maintaining the stadium’s world-class status. Support from local sponsors has been crucial, with the Invercargill Licensing Trust (ILT) contributing $25 million over the past 25 years. “We wouldn’t be here without our funders,” said Toni McDonald, another key figure involved in the stadium’s operations.

As Invercargill Stadium enters its next chapter, the commitment to serving the community and hosting diverse events remains unwavering. The facility stands as a testament to resilience and innovation, ensuring its place as a vital hub in the region for years to come.
