Global Smartphone Sales Projected to Rise as AI Devices Surge

Global smartphone sales are expected to see a modest increase in 2025, driven by a significant rise in demand for AI-enabled mobile devices. According to a report released by research firm IDC, worldwide smartphone sales are projected to grow by 1% compared to last year, reaching a total of 1.24 billion units. This growth is notable amidst ongoing economic challenges, particularly due to unexpectedly high demand in regions such as the United States, the Middle East, and Africa.
The report highlights that Apple continues to lead the market, with expectations to sell 3.9% more iPhones in 2025 compared to the previous year. The company’s strong performance underlines its ability to navigate the competitive landscape effectively.
A key trend identified by IDC is the increasing popularity of AI-enabled smartphones. The report anticipates that approximately 370 million AI-enabled devices will be sold in 2025, accounting for 30% of total smartphone sales. This segment is expected to skyrocket, with projections indicating that by 2029, AI mobiles will represent 70% of the market share.
Growth of Foldable Phones
Alongside the rise of AI devices, IDC also examines the emerging category of foldable smartphones. The report predicts a year-over-year growth rate of 6% in 2025, continuing with another 6% increase in 2026, and an impressive 11% growth in 2027 as this segment matures. Despite this encouraging forecast, the demand for foldable phones is expected to remain limited. By 2029, foldable devices are projected to comprise only 3% of total smartphone shipments.
IDC’s findings underscore the evolving landscape of the mobile phone market, where innovation in AI technology and unique form factors like foldable designs are shaping consumer preferences. As manufacturers adapt to these trends, the market is poised for notable changes in the coming years.
In summary, the smartphone market is on track for a slight rebound, with a growing emphasis on AI capabilities and foldable designs. Stakeholders in the industry will be closely monitoring these trends as they unfold, particularly as consumer demand continues to evolve.
