Smartphone Sales Projected to Rise as AI Devices Gain Ground

Global smartphone sales are on track for a modest increase, with a significant shift towards artificial intelligence-enabled devices anticipated over the next few years. According to a report from the research firm IDC, global smartphone sales are expected to rise by 1% in 2025, reaching a total of 1.24 billion units. This growth occurs despite ongoing economic challenges in various regions, driven largely by strong demand in the United States, the Middle East, and Africa.
Apple continues to lead the market, projected to sell 3.9% more iPhones in 2025 compared to the previous year. The company’s strong brand loyalty and innovative features contribute to its success in this competitive landscape.
Shift Towards AI-Enabled Devices
The report highlights a noteworthy trend: AI-enabled smartphones are expected to account for 30% of total sales in 2025, with an anticipated 370 million units sold this year. IDC forecasts that this share will surge to 70% by the year 2029, indicating a significant technological shift in consumer preferences.
Furthermore, the report addresses the growing interest in foldable smartphones. IDC anticipates a 6% year-over-year growth in this category for both 2025 and 2026, followed by an even more ambitious 11% increase in 2027. While this growth signifies a maturing market for foldables, the report cautions that demand is expected to remain modest. By 2029, foldable devices are projected to represent only 3% of total smartphone shipments.
As the smartphone market evolves, it reflects broader technological trends and consumer behaviors. The increasing integration of AI into mobile devices not only enhances user experience but also sets the stage for future developments in the technology sector.
With these projections, stakeholders in the smartphone industry are advised to adapt to changing consumer demands and technological advancements. The coming years may redefine how smartphones are perceived and utilized across the globe, making it essential for manufacturers to innovate and respond to emerging trends.
