Smartphone Sales Projected to Rise with AI Models Dominating Market

Global smartphone sales are set to experience a modest increase, with a notable shift towards artificial intelligence-enabled devices. According to a report by the research firm IDC, worldwide smartphone sales are projected to rise by 1% in 2025, reaching a total of 1.24 billion units. This growth is occurring despite ongoing economic challenges, largely fueled by unexpectedly high demand in the United States, the Middle East, and Africa.
Among the major players in the market, Apple Inc. is expected to perform particularly well. The company anticipates a 3.9% increase in iPhone sales this year compared to the previous year. This positions Apple as a leader in a competitive landscape where innovation and consumer preferences are rapidly evolving.
AI Mobiles Set for Dominance
The IDC report highlights a significant trend towards AI-enabled smartphones, forecasting that 370 million such devices will be sold this year, making up 30% of total smartphone sales. Looking ahead, this share is expected to leap to 70% by 2029 as consumer interest in artificial intelligence capabilities grows. Features like improved camera functions and personalized user experiences are driving this demand.
The report also examines the emerging category of foldable phones, predicting a steady growth rate of 6% year-over-year for 2025 and 2026, with an anticipated acceleration to 11% in 2027. While this growth is promising, IDC notes that foldable phones will still represent a relatively small segment of the market, projected to account for just 3% of total smartphone shipments by 2029.
As smartphone manufacturers navigate the complexities of a shifting market, the integration of AI technology appears to be a key factor in driving sales. The industry is set to undergo significant changes in the coming years, with consumer preferences evolving alongside advancements in mobile technology.
In conclusion, the outlook for smartphone sales remains cautiously optimistic, with AI-enabled devices poised to take center stage. As companies like Apple continue to innovate, the landscape of mobile technology is likely to transform, influencing how consumers engage with their devices.
