Ōmokoroa Family Celebrates Homeownership Through Shared Ownership Scheme
A family in Ōmokoroa has transitioned from renting to homeownership, marking a significant milestone through a shared ownership scheme. Parents Naomi and Darcy Gilbert became the first residents of the Housing Foundation’s new development near Tauranga, allowing them to secure a four-bedroom home for their blended family of nine children.
The Gilberts officially moved into their home in July 2023. Naomi expressed excitement about this new chapter, stating, “We’ve absolutely loved it.” The family has embraced their new living situation, with two of their children joining the couple in the home while four others visit every third weekend, creating a bustling atmosphere.
The shared ownership model aims to make housing more accessible, particularly for families who may otherwise struggle to enter the property market. By purchasing a share of the home, the Gilberts have alleviated some of the financial pressures associated with homeownership. This initiative is increasingly seen as a viable solution to the housing crisis affecting many regions.
With their new home, the Gilberts have not only secured a stable environment for their children but also joined a growing community in Ōmokoroa. The development by the Housing Foundation represents an important step in addressing housing affordability, providing families with opportunities that were previously out of reach.
As the Gilberts settle into their new home, their story highlights the potential impact of shared ownership schemes in enabling families to achieve their dreams of homeownership.
