Qatar Advances in U-23 Asian Cup Qualifiers with Win Over India

Qatar strengthened its position in the AFC U23 Asian Cup qualifiers by defeating India 2-1 on October 6, 2023, at the Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium. This victory marked Qatar’s second consecutive win in Group H, following an impressive 13-0 victory over Brunei just days earlier.
Hashmi Al Hussain opened the scoring for Qatar in the 18th minute, rising above the Indian defense to score with a header. Jassem Al Sharshani later converted a penalty kick in the 65th minute after Pramveer Singh was sent off for a second yellow card. Muhammad Suhail managed to pull one back for India in the 52nd minute, but it was not enough to change the outcome.
Qatar’s Path to Qualification
This win propelled Qatar to the top of Group H with six points, boasting a remarkable goal difference of +14. India and Bahrain currently share second and third place in the group, each with three points. With the top team and four best runners-up advancing to the final tournament in Saudi Arabia in 2026, Qatar’s qualification appears promising, though not yet mathematically secured.
India began the match with a strong start, applying pressure on Qatar’s defense with quick passing sequences. However, it was Qatar that broke the deadlock first. Al Hussain’s header not only showcased his aerial prowess but also set the tone for the match.
After halftime, India came out determined to equalize. They found their reward when Suhail deftly headed in a cross from Mohammed Sanan, leveling the score at 1-1. This goal energized the Indian side, igniting hopes of a comeback.
Turning Point in the Match
India’s momentum shifted dramatically in the 65th minute. Pramveer Singh, already on a yellow card, received another for a foul on Noureldin Ibrahim inside the penalty area. This dismissal proved costly for India as Al Sharshani confidently converted the penalty, restoring Qatar’s lead and scoring his second goal in as many matches.
From that point, Qatar managed the game effectively, maintaining possession and limiting India’s chances. The team’s disciplined performance ensured they sealed the victory and kept their perfect record intact.
Looking ahead, Qatar will face Bahrain in their final group match on October 10, 2023, after Bahrain’s recent 10-0 win over Brunei. As the qualifiers continue, Qatar remains a strong contender for the U23 Asian Cup.
