Government Surpasses Elective Surgery Targets as Wait Times Decline

The New Zealand Government has achieved significant progress in reducing wait times for elective surgeries, surpassing its half-year target by completing over 16,000 additional operations before the end of June 2023. Health Minister Simeon Brown expressed optimism about the advancements made in the health sector, emphasizing that they are on track to meet their goal of having 95 percent of patients waiting less than four months for procedures by 2030.

During an interview with Ryan Bridge, Brown detailed the improvements in surgical wait times, noting that the proportion of patients waiting for essential surgeries had increased until the beginning of this year, when it fell to 58 percent. This drop indicates that the Government has successfully managed to reduce the backlog that had accumulated over the years.
