Al Brown Releases New Fishing Guidebook ‘Hooked’ for Enthusiasts

Renowned chef Al Brown has launched his first guidebook focused on the art of fishing, titled ‘Hooked’. Known for his exceptional fish recipes, Brown’s new book emphasizes the importance of sustainable fishing practices, highlighting that what anglers release is just as vital as what they keep. This guide aims to educate readers about both the fishing experience and the culinary applications of their catch.
During a recent outing at Cornwallis Wharf, located approximately 45 minutes from downtown Auckland, Brown shared insights from his book alongside photographer Michael Craig and journalist Kim Knight. The atmosphere was lively, with around two dozen fishing rods casting lines into the water while divers began harvesting the season’s first scallops. Amidst the briny air and the sounds of boats maneuvering in the harbor, Brown reflected on the anticipation that fishing brings.
“The word that always comes to my mind around fishing is anticipation,” Brown explained. “Even as a kid, going eeling. Are you going to see an eel? Are you going to catch an eel? There’s something about that. What’s happening? What’s coming?” His perspective encapsulates the essence of fishing, where hope intertwines with the thrill of the unknown.
In his guidebook, Brown not only shares recipes but also details sustainable practices that ensure future generations can enjoy the same fishing experiences. He stresses the significance of catch-and-release techniques and encourages readers to respect marine ecosystems while pursuing their passion for fishing.
As the day at Cornwallis Wharf unfolded, the sense of community and shared experience among fishermen was palpable. Local anglers were eager to exchange tips and techniques, reinforcing the idea that fishing is as much about connections as it is about the catch. Brown’s guide serves as a resource for both seasoned fishermen and novices alike, aiming to inspire a deeper appreciation for the sport and its environmental impact.
With its release, ‘Hooked’ marks a significant milestone for Al Brown, merging his culinary expertise with a commitment to responsible fishing. The guidebook is expected to resonate with readers who seek not only to improve their fishing skills but also to foster a relationship with the natural world.
Through this new venture, Brown invites everyone to engage with fishing in a meaningful way, ensuring that the practice remains enjoyable and sustainable for years to come.
