UK Anaesthetist Faces Tribunal After Alleged Mid-Operation Incident

A Manchester anaesthetist’s professional fitness is under scrutiny following an incident in which he was allegedly found engaging in sexual activity with a nurse during surgery. Dr Suhail Anjum, aged 44, is facing a tribunal with the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) to assess his conduct that took place at Tameside Hospital in Greater Manchester in September 2023.
The situation reportedly unfolded shortly after Dr Anjum put a patient under anaesthesia. According to reports from Metro, he asked a colleague to monitor the unconscious patient while he took a “comfort break.” However, it is alleged that instead of a break, he sought a different kind of “comfort” from a female nurse in a separate operating theatre.
This incident raises serious concerns regarding professional conduct within the medical field, particularly in environments where patient safety is paramount. The tribunal will examine the details surrounding the case, including the implications of Dr Anjum’s actions on the patient and the overall integrity of the healthcare profession.
Dr Anjum’s case highlights ongoing discussions about ethics in medicine and the critical importance of maintaining professional boundaries. The outcome of the tribunal could have significant repercussions not only for the anaesthetist himself but also for the standards upheld in medical practice throughout the region.
As the proceedings unfold, the medical community and the public will be watching closely to see how the tribunal addresses these serious allegations and what measures may be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.
