Candidates Address Rates Rise at Local Board Meeting in Snells Beach
About 50 residents gathered at the Salty Dog Inn in Snells Beach on September 1 to engage with three candidates running for the Rodney Local Board’s Warkworth Subdivision seats. The meeting focused on the recent rise in local rates, a pressing issue for the community.
Tim Holdgate, David Robb, and Ivan Wagstaff participated in a question-and-answer session moderated by Brian Fehsenfeld, the treasurer of the Snells Beach Residents and Ratepayers Association (SBRRA). The candidates addressed various questions from the audience, providing insights into their positions and proposed solutions regarding the recent rate increases that have affected local residents.
The event was the second candidates meeting in the lead-up to the local government elections, allowing voters to better understand the candidates’ perspectives on important issues. Each candidate took turns responding to concerns raised by attendees, particularly about the implications of the rate rise on local services and community development.
The discussion highlighted how residents feel about the financial pressures resulting from increased rates. Candidates emphasized the need for transparent communication between the local board and the community. Holdgate noted that understanding the reasons behind the rate increase is crucial for fostering trust.
Robb reiterated the importance of ensuring that any increase in rates is justified and leads to tangible improvements in community services. He expressed a commitment to reviewing the budgeting process to ensure that residents receive value for their money. Wagstaff added that he believes in engaging residents directly in discussions about financial decisions that impact their lives.
Candidate Taabeta Tebau was unable to attend the meeting, which left some attendees curious about her stance on the rate issues. Despite her absence, the three candidates present offered a comprehensive view of their plans and priorities should they be elected.
As the local government elections approach, candidates are expected to continue addressing the concerns of residents regarding rates and other local governance issues. Engaging with the community through events like this one is vital for fostering informed decision-making among voters.
The next candidates meeting is anticipated to draw even more residents eager to voice their concerns and hear from all candidates. This engagement is seen as an essential part of the democratic process, ensuring that the voices of the community are heard in local governance.
