Black Ferns Lose Key Player Amy du Plessis to Injury Ahead of Quarter-Final

The New Zealand Black Ferns will face a significant setback in their quest for the Women’s Rugby World Cup title as midfielder Amy du Plessis has been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament due to a shoulder injury. The 26-year-old sustained the injury during the opening match against Spain, which took place on October 8, 2023.
Du Plessis appeared to injure her shoulder when she landed awkwardly in a tackle near the try line late in the first half. Although she managed to complete the first half, she was substituted at halftime. Following her injury, she missed the subsequent pool play matches against Japan and Ireland.
Initially, there was optimism surrounding her potential return, as she had been named to come off the bench for the highly anticipated quarter-final against South Africa scheduled for the morning of October 14, 2023. However, in a disappointing update released early that morning, the Black Ferns confirmed that du Plessis would not participate in the match, effectively ending her World Cup campaign.
The absence of du Plessis is a significant blow to the Black Ferns, who rely on her experience and skill in the midfield. Her contributions during the tournament were expected to be critical as the team aimed to progress further in the competition.
The Black Ferns have expressed their support for du Plessis during this challenging time. Team captain Ruahei Demant acknowledged the impact of losing a player of du Plessis’ caliber, emphasizing the unity within the squad as they prepare to face South Africa without her.
The team will need to rally together and adapt their strategy as they head into the quarter-final, which is crucial for their hopes of advancing in the tournament. The Black Ferns remain focused on their goal, determined to continue representing New Zealand with pride, despite the challenges ahead.
