New Zealand Police Join Massive Manhunt for Accused Cop Killer
The search for accused cop killer Dezi Freeman has intensified, with New Zealand police joining what is now the largest tactical police operation in Australian history. Freeman, a suspect in the shooting of a police officer in Porepunkah, Victoria, has evaded capture for over 20 days. Hundreds of officers from various police departments, along with the Australian Federal Police and military personnel, are combing through dense and rugged bushland in Victoria’s northeast in an effort to locate him.
On Friday, a contingent of New Zealand officers participated in a focused search around Freeman’s property in Porepunkah. The request for assistance was made by their Australian counterparts, demonstrating a robust trans-Tasman cooperation in addressing the ongoing crisis. Acting Assistant Commissioner Penelope Gifford of New Zealand Police confirmed the collaboration, stating that their officers were deployed to support the extensive operation.
Efforts to apprehend Freeman have involved not only local police forces but also teams from multiple jurisdictions across Australia. The operation has attracted significant national attention, with authorities emphasizing the need for public assistance in locating the fugitive. The rugged terrain and the elusive nature of the suspect have posed considerable challenges for the search teams.
Freeman’s alleged crime has raised serious concerns within the community and among law enforcement agencies. Police have urged anyone with information regarding his whereabouts to come forward. The ongoing manhunt illustrates the urgency and severity of the situation, as police work tirelessly to bring the accused to justice.
As the operation continues, both Australian and New Zealand police forces remain committed to their mission. The collaborative efforts signify a united front against crime and highlight the effectiveness of cross-border cooperation in law enforcement.
