New Ventures Revitalize Former Takitimu Seafoods Building in Napier
The former Takitimu Seafoods building in Napier is set to welcome two new food businesses, revitalizing a space that has remained dormant since April 2023. Pinky’s Ice Cream Parlour plans to open its doors on October 18, while Foodflo has occupied the premises since March 2024. This development marks a significant turn for the Ahuriri area, which has seen a decline in activity following the closure of the previous establishment.
Originally known as Hawke’s Bay Seafoods, the building was sold to Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Inc in 2019 and was subsequently rebranded as Takitimu Seafoods. Unfortunately, the business struggled financially, culminating in its closure after incurring losses of nearly $15 million over three years. The iwi has been working on plans to reinvigorate the property since its closure.
Bayden Barber, chair of Ngāti Kahungunu, indicated that there were advanced negotiations in 2024 with a Vietnamese business interested in leasing the building, which had connections to the fishing industry. However, changes in immigration settings rendered this opportunity unfeasible. As a result, the iwi shifted its focus to attracting new tenants who could breathe life back into the location.
The arrival of Pinky’s Ice Cream Parlour, known for its diverse range of flavors, and Foodflo, which provides a variety of food options, aims to enhance the local dining scene. Locals and visitors alike are eager to see how these new ventures will transform the area.
The Takitimu Seafoods building has long been a part of the community, and its revitalization reflects a broader trend of repurposing historic properties to meet current market demands. As these new businesses prepare to open, they signal a renewed hope for economic activity in the Ahuriri area, demonstrating resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges.
The community is watching closely as Pinky’s Ice Cream Parlour prepares to launch, potentially setting a new standard for food experiences in Napier. With the support of local residents and the ongoing efforts of Ngāti Kahungunu, the future of this storied building looks promising.
