Nutritionist Shares Simple, Delicious Recipes for Busy Families
Eating nutritious food does not have to be complicated or bland, according to nutritionist Sarah Pound. In her new book, titled Family Food, she aims to dispel the myth that healthy meals require extensive time and effort. Pound, a full-time working mother of three young daughters, emphasizes that meals can be both exciting and budget-friendly.
Pound’s approach focuses on simplicity and efficiency. With family life often hectic, she advocates for using a few nutrient-dense ingredients combined with clever cooking techniques to create quick and wholesome meals. “I share my favourite, everyday recipes and useful tips to help you embrace this approach, even on the busiest of days,” she states.
The importance of cooking at home with whole foods has grown, especially as many face increasing temptations from ultra-processed options. According to Pound, making meals from scratch allows individuals to control their dietary choices and prioritize their health. “As we face increasingly sedentary lifestyles due to work demands and screen time, I believe prioritising home cooking is vital for our health,” she explains.
Pound highlights the significant connection between food and emotional wellbeing. “Food not only impacts our physical health but also plays a significant role in our emotional and mental wellbeing,” she notes. Her philosophy centres around the idea that nourishing the body with whole, unprocessed, seasonal foods is essential.
While some processed foods can be beneficial, such as canned tomatoes and beans, Pound advises making informed choices. “It’s more about making smart choices — opt for processed foods that are less harmful and still offer some nutritional value,” she emphasizes.
Involving children in meal preparation is another key aspect of Pound’s philosophy. She believes that when kids participate in cooking and meal planning, they are more likely to make healthier choices in the future. “When kids participate in meal planning and preparation, they are more likely to choose healthier options and be open to trying new foods,” she remarks.
Pound understands the challenges busy parents face when it comes to providing nutritious meals. Her book is structured to cater to different needs, featuring recipes that are super simple, quick to prepare, and appealing to fussy eaters. The chapters cover a variety of meal types, including salads, abundance bowls, pasta dishes, weeknight meals, lunchbox treats, and desserts.
Family Food, published by Plum at a retail price of $49.99, includes a range of recipes designed to fit into the busy lives of families. The book features photography by Mark Roper, enhancing the appeal of each dish.
One standout recipe from the book is the Vietnamese Chicken Bowl, which serves four and highlights the vibrant flavors of fresh herbs and crunchy toppings. The dish requires 600 grams of boneless and skinless chicken thighs, fish sauce, honey, soy sauce, lemongrass paste, and vermicelli noodles, among other ingredients. After marinating the chicken, it is cooked until golden brown and served with fresh vegetables and a tangy nuoc mam sauce.
Another recipe, a refreshing Risoni Salad, combines 300 grams of risoni pasta with cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans, and a variety of herbs. It features a light garlic and maple syrup vinaigrette, making it a versatile dish perfect for warm weather.
For those who prefer fish, Pound presents a simple yet flavorful Salmon Couscous Salad. This dish incorporates pearl couscous, vegetables, olives, and a herbed buttermilk dressing, providing a balanced meal that is quick to prepare.
Pound’s message is clear: healthy eating can be accessible and enjoyable. By focusing on wholesome ingredients and simple cooking techniques, families can embrace nutritious meals without the stress. With recipes that cater to busy lifestyles, Family Food offers a practical guide for those looking to improve their eating habits while still enjoying delicious flavours.
