Christchurch Launches Voting Bins to Boost Local Election Turnout

Voting has commenced in Christchurch for the local body elections, with ballots being distributed across the city. The delivery of voting papers will continue until October 11, 2023, when polls close at noon. In recent years, voter turnout for local elections has been notably low; only 43.31% of eligible voters participated in the 2022 elections, down from 41.13% in 2019. In contrast, national general election turnout figures are significantly higher, with 78.2% of voters participating in the 2023 elections and 82.2% in 2020.

To address the low turnout for local elections, officials are promoting the use of voting bins at various locations throughout the city. While postal voting remains available, the initiative aims to encourage more residents to cast their votes in person. For the first time, all 12 Woolworths supermarkets in Christchurch will serve as voting locations, offering bins to facilitate the process.

Expanded Access Across the City

Several supermarkets and city council facilities will host voting bins. FreshChoice supermarkets, which are operated as franchises of Woolworths New Zealand, have also opted to participate. Specifically, FreshChoice locations in Edgeware, Fendalton, Lyttelton, and Parklands have confirmed they will have bins available.

Many New World supermarkets are joining the initiative, with locations such as Bishopdale, Durham St, Ferry Rd, Halswell, Ilam, Northwood, Marshland, St Martins, Prestons, and Wigram all participating. Notably, Pak’nSave Wainoni is the only Pak’nSave location that has signed up to host a voting bin.

The initiative extends beyond supermarkets. Christchurch Airport and the Puaka James Hight Library at Canterbury University will also provide voting bins. Various city council facilities, including libraries and community pools, will join in providing accessible voting options for residents.

This expanded access aims to improve voter engagement and participation in local governance. The local body elections serve as an important opportunity for residents to voice their opinions on community issues and elect representatives who will influence local policies and decisions.

As voting progresses, officials are hopeful that these measures will lead to a higher voter turnout, reflecting the community’s commitment to civic participation.
