An Auckland man has been sentenced to more than three years in prison for possessing nearly 9,000 images of child sexual exploitation material. The sentencing follows a thorough investigation by the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) in collaboration with an international law enforcement agency. This inquiry focused on the sale of child sexual exploitation material via a social media application.

Todd Keith Laurance Dale Williams, 30, pleaded guilty to four charges of knowingly possessing child exploitation material. Authorities discovered 8,928 images and videos across multiple devices and accounts, which included distressing content depicting the sexual abuse of infants and children.

In early 2023, Williams emerged as a person of interest in the investigation. The DIA later received a report from the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children regarding a harmful video uploaded to social media. The account attributed to this upload was linked to Williams.

Impact of Child Exploitation Material

Tim Houston, manager of the DIA Digital Child Exploitation Team, emphasized the severe implications of possessing such material. He stated, “Every image and video possessed by this offender depicts a crime scene, and the worst moment in a child’s life.” Houston highlighted the importance of proactive measures taken by the DIA in partnership with both New Zealand and international agencies to identify and prosecute individuals involved in trading objectionable material. He noted the necessity of preventing further victimization of children exploited for the gratification of offenders.

The court ordered the destruction of the devices used by Williams to store and access the child sexual exploitation material. At the Auckland District Court, Williams was sentenced to three years and seven months in prison. He was also mandated to register as a child sex offender, a step intended to monitor and manage offenders post-incarceration.

This case underlines the ongoing battle against child exploitation and the role of law enforcement in safeguarding vulnerable individuals. The collaboration between agencies aims to ensure that those who participate in such crimes face significant consequences, as the protection of children remains a paramount concern for society.
