Alzheimers Otago Hosts Fundraising Events for Awareness Month
Alzheimers Otago is spearheading a series of events to raise awareness about dementia throughout September, culminating in a fundraising film screening on World Alzheimer’s Day, which falls on September 21, 2023. The highlight of the month will be the screening of the documentary Human Forever, showcasing the journey of Dutch carer Teun Toebes and filmmaker Jonathan de Jong as they explore dementia care across 11 countries. This event will take place at 6 PM in the Castle 2 lecture theatre on the University of Otago campus.
The documentary aims to highlight global approaches to dementia care, providing insights that could lead to a more inclusive future for people living with the condition. The film is in Dutch with English subtitles, and all proceeds from ticket sales will support Alzheimers Otago, which provides essential services to local families affected by dementia. Tickets can be purchased through Humanitix.
Expanding Outreach Through Podcasts and Community Events
In addition to the film screening, Alzheimers Otago manager Antoinette McLean will launch a podcast titled “Still Me — Life with Dementia” on September 21 via Otago Access Radio OAR FM. This ten-episode series will cover various aspects of dementia, featuring interviews with professionals, including dementia advisers, social workers, and experts such as Prof Yoram Barak and Prof Cliff Abraham from the University of Otago. McLean expressed her goal for the podcast, stating, “Through the podcast, I want to give people information about dementia and also to help move the conversation forward to help remove the stigma. Ultimately, if we can encourage people to seek help earlier, then everyone will benefit.”
Alzheimers Otago is witnessing a growing demand for its services, which include one-on-one support, ten carer support groups across Otago, and various brain activity programmes such as Mind in Motion, Minds Together, and Bright Minds. McLean emphasized the complexity of cases they encounter, noting that they require more time and resources. “We do our best to support everyone to the best of our ability,” she added.
Community Participation and Awareness Initiatives
Multiple local organizations are participating in events to mark World Alzheimer’s Day this week. Summerset at Bishopscourt retirement village plans to host an awareness morning tea on September 22, while Lesley Groves rest-home will hold a similar event on September 24. Additionally, Radius Fulton Care will also host a morning tea.
The Dunedin Public Library will feature an Alzheimer’s awareness display on September 21 to further educate the community on dementia-related issues. These initiatives are part of Alzheimers Otago’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness and provide support to those impacted by dementia.
