Dogs Deliver Books to Students at St Matthew’s School

Students at St Matthew’s School in Marton, New Zealand, received an exciting surprise recently as dogs delivered books to the school. The visit was organized by the Duffy Books in Homes charity, a program aimed at promoting literacy among children by providing them with free books.
During the event, which took place on October 10, 2023, the charity brought along a team of friendly dogs, each carrying a selection of books in specially designed bags. The initiative not only created a buzz among the students but also aimed to instill a love for reading in a fun and interactive way.
The dogs, accompanied by their handlers, engaged with the children, making the experience memorable. “The joy on the students’ faces as they greeted the dogs was truly heartwarming,” said Sarah Thompson, a representative from Duffy Books in Homes. “We believe that fostering a love for reading can significantly impact a child’s educational journey.”
Duffy Books in Homes has been successfully operating in New Zealand for over two decades. The charity works with schools to ensure that children have access to quality reading materials. They have distributed over 2 million books to children since their inception, aiming to reach every child in New Zealand.
This initiative is particularly important as literacy rates are a key indicator of academic success. By engaging children with books in such a unique manner, Duffy Books in Homes hopes to encourage reading habits that will last a lifetime.
The presence of the dogs added an element of excitement that captivated the students’ attention. “The combination of dogs and books made it a perfect day,” noted Principal Mark Davis of St Matthew’s School. “Our students are eager to read, and events like these inspire them further.”
As the event concluded, students left with their new books, excited to dive into their reading adventures. The initiative not only provided them with resources but also created lasting memories that connect learning with joy.
Overall, the day was a resounding success, highlighting the ongoing efforts by Duffy Books in Homes to promote literacy and the joy of reading in innovative ways. The partnership between the charity, the dogs, and the school illustrates how creativity can play a pivotal role in education.
