Demolition of Abandoned Khandallah Home Begins After Complaints

Residents of Khandallah, a suburb in Wellington, are experiencing relief as demolition work has commenced on a long-abandoned home that has been a source of distress for years. The property, located on Kabul Street, had been plagued by mould and decay, leading to significant concerns from the local community.

Earlier this month, RNZ reported on the deteriorating condition of the house, built in the 1980s, which had become notorious in the area for its foul odour and unsightly appearance. According to local resident Paul Ash, the abandoned home had transformed into “an industrial-sized puffball of mould spores,” heightening fears of crime and health risks in the vicinity.

In response to ongoing complaints from residents, RNZ reached out to the owner of the property, who acknowledged the situation. The owner confirmed that demolition would begin around September 17, signalling a long-awaited resolution to the community’s grievances.

The presence of steel gates and warning signs now marks the site, indicating that the demolition process is officially underway. For many residents, this development brings a sense of hope for a cleaner, safer environment in Khandallah. The local community has expressed gratitude for the action taken, viewing it as a necessary step towards revitalising the area.
