Tajana Edges Out Lollapalooza in Thrilling Sunline Vase Finish

The Group 3 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Sunline Vase at Ellerslie on October 7, 2023, delivered an electrifying finish as Tajana narrowly defeated Lollapalooza to claim victory. Both fillies were pre-race favorites, with early predictions suggesting a tight contest between them, and the race unfolded just as anticipated.
Race Dynamics and Strategy
Trained by Shaune Ritchie and Colm Murray, Tajana and Lollapalooza are regarded as two of the most promising three-year-old fillies of the spring racing season. Despite the attention focused on these two, several other contenders also posed legitimate threats throughout the race. Nonetheless, the anticipated showdown materialized, culminating in a dramatic finish.
As the race progressed, both fillies were placed strategically towards the back of the pack. Riders Vinnie Colgan on Lollapalooza and George Rooke on Tajana settled in second- and third-last positions during the early stages. This tactical decision allowed them to conserve energy for a strong push in the latter part of the race.
As they approached the home bend, Rooke opted to steer Tajana towards the outer rail, while Colgan maneuvered Lollapalooza through the middle in search of space. The race intensified as they began their charge, with Little Black Dress leading the way just 200 meters from the finish line.
A Nail-Biting Finish
In the final stretch, both Tajana and Lollapalooza surged forward, quickly closing the gap on Little Black Dress. With 100 meters remaining, the two fillies managed to collar the leader, resulting in a breathtaking finish. Tajana, with a powerful thrust, edged ahead at the right moment, crossing the finish line just a nose in front of Lollapalooza.
This victory marked Tajana’s second consecutive stakes win, having previously triumphed in the Group 3 Northland Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) a month prior. The thrilling outcome not only showcases the talents of both fillies but also sets the stage for an exciting lead-up to the upcoming 1000 Guineas, where both will likely be considered joint favorites.
As the spring racing season continues, fans and pundits alike will be eagerly watching the development of these exceptional fillies, especially following their remarkable performance in the Sunline Vase. With both Tajana and Lollapalooza demonstrating their capabilities, the anticipation for future races is mounting.
