All Blacks Prepare for Bledisloe Cup Clash Against Wallabies

The All Blacks are gearing up for their first Bledisloe Cup test against the Wallabies, set to kick off at 17:05 on September 27, 2023, at Eden Park in Auckland. Following their record defeat to the Springboks, head coach Scott Robertson faces crucial decisions regarding team selection, with potential changes expected to reinvigorate the squad.
Robertson will announce his lineup on Thursday at 12:15, but several players are likely to make a significant impact. Among them is Cam Roigard, who demonstrated his readiness by performing well off the bench for Counties-Manukau last weekend. His return is anticipated, alongside Codie Taylor, who is expected to start at hooker.
Another key selection will be the fly-half position. Although Beauden Barrett has been the preferred starter this season, Robertson may opt to give Damian McKenzie a chance to shine. The All Blacks’ attack struggled during their last match, and McKenzie’s style could suit the Wallabies’ anticipated run-heavy approach. If McKenzie starts, Will Jordan may move back to fullback, creating a dynamic backline.
Potential Changes in the Forward Pack
The All Blacks’ forward pack could see notable adjustments as well. Fabian Holland, who started the first five tests of his career, has the opportunity to reclaim a starting position following his stint on the bench during the Springbok series. If Tupou Vaa’i shifts to the blindside, it may allow Holland to return to the starting lineup, providing additional depth.
The selection of loose forwards will also be pivotal. Simon Parker was initially chosen to counter the Springboks’ powerful runners, but his role may be reduced if Vaa’i moves. This change would provide the All Blacks with three lineout targets, a necessity given the set-piece struggles observed in Wellington.
In the front row, the All Blacks will face a different challenge against the Wallabies’ scrum compared to the Springboks. Tamaiti Williams has not been in peak form but will have a chance to regain his confidence, especially after a solid performance in last year’s corresponding match.
Midfield and Backline Decisions
A pressing decision for Robertson involves Leicester Fainga’anuku, who has been restored to eligibility. The coaching staff must decide whether to include him in the matchday squad or assign him back to the NPC. Billy Proctor has emerged as a key player in recent discussions, and if he starts at centre, he will need a strong performance to validate his position at the test level. The experienced Anton Lienert-Brown and Rieko Ioane are also options if Robertson chooses to revert to his traditional backline setup.
On the wings, Leroy Carter is likely to retain his starting position after a commendable performance, but Caleb Clarke and Sevu Reece are also in contention. Clarke has shown promise in recent games, while Reece’s history of success against the Wallabies could be a deciding factor in his selection.
As the All Blacks prepare for this important fixture, fans are eager to see how the team will respond to their previous defeat. The Bledisloe Cup, a prestigious tournament in rugby, always brings high stakes and intense competition. The outcome of this match could set the tone for the remainder of the season, making it a pivotal moment for the All Blacks.
