Police Seize Dirt Bike After Damage to Belmont Park and Farms
Authorities have seized a dirt bike linked to an incident that caused significant damage at Belmont Regional Park and farmland, alarming local livestock. The incident involved reckless riding that resulted in harm to newly planted native trees and created stress for animals during the lambing season. The bike was confiscated on Sunday and will be impounded for a duration of six months.
The dirt bike, identified through police investigations, is part of a troubling pattern of illegal activity within the park. According to the police, the vehicle is one of several that have been used to damage farm infrastructure and disturb livestock in the area. The ongoing investigations have raised concerns among local farmers and residents about the safety of both the land and animals.
Police Investigation and Community Impact
Earlier this week, Porirua Police launched an appeal for information regarding a group of five males suspected of regularly riding dirt bikes from the Waitangirua and Cannons Creek areas. These riders reportedly traverse iwi land before entering Belmont Park and moving onto Belmont Farm, further compounding the issues faced by local farmers.
The reckless use of dirt bikes in these areas not only endangers livestock but also undermines the hard work put into preserving the environment. Local farmers have expressed their frustration over the ongoing disturbances, particularly during crucial periods like the lambing season when animals are particularly vulnerable.
Community Response and Safety Concerns
In response to these incidents, local authorities are urging the community to report any sightings or information regarding the riders. The police emphasize the importance of community vigilance in protecting both the park and agricultural lands from further damage.
The seizure of the dirt bike marks a significant step in addressing these concerns, but it also highlights the need for ongoing dialogue between law enforcement, local farmers, and the community. As investigations continue, the police remain committed to ensuring the safety and integrity of Belmont Regional Park and its surrounding farmland.
