Auckland Kayak Business Targeted in Series of Break-ins

Police have arrested a man following a series of three break-ins at Fergs Kayaks, a popular kayak business located on Auckland’s waterfront. The incidents occurred within just one week, leaving the owner, Ed Hides, facing significant costs to repair damage caused by the burglaries. Windows were allegedly smashed to gain access to the premises, where the suspect reportedly stole ice cream and cookies.
The 25-year-old man has been charged with at least one count of burglary. Hides discovered the break-in as he monitored security cameras that had been set up only hours prior to the first incident. The timely installation of the cameras played a crucial role in catching the offender in the act, allowing police to respond swiftly.
Hides expressed frustration over the impact of these events, particularly as the business serves children during their school holiday programme. “Spending three mornings sweeping glass among the children has been rough,” he stated. The repeated incidents not only disrupt operations but also pose safety concerns for young visitors.
Fergs Kayaks is situated on Tamaki Drive, a vibrant area frequented by both locals and tourists. It has become a staple for outdoor enthusiasts, offering kayaking experiences and equipment rentals. The break-ins have raised concerns about security in the area and the implications for local businesses.
With repair costs running into thousands, Hides is now focused on restoring the business to its normal operations while addressing the aftermath of the break-ins. As the investigation continues, local law enforcement is encouraging anyone with information about the incidents to come forward.
The situation highlights the challenges faced by small businesses in maintaining security amidst rising concerns over property crime. Hides remains hopeful that increased community vigilance and support will help deter future incidents.
