A touching funeral procession honoring Dixon Bangma, a nine-year-old boy who battled a rare form of epilepsy known as Dravet Syndrome, took place in Gore, New Zealand, on March 2, 2024. More than 20 trucks, vintage cars, and other vehicles participated in the procession, celebrating Dixon’s life and the profound impact he had on those around him.

Dixon’s mother, Elisha Bangma, expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support from the community. “All these people, they showed such support for my baby boy,” she said, visibly moved by the turnout. “He was just ‘him,’ and to see such support is overwhelmingly beautiful. It just means so much to us.”

The funeral procession was organized by Southland Hug a Rig, a group dedicated to supporting families in need through acts of kindness. Dianne Elstob, the convener of the organization, initiated the idea for the send-off, understanding the family’s connection to Hug a Rig and Dixon’s love for trucks. “I just thought it would be a good send-off for a 9-year-old,” she remarked. “It was something we could do to support the family during this difficult time.”

Elisha Bangma noted that words of thanks feel insufficient for the community’s generosity. “I’m just truly grateful for how everyone pulled in and made this happen for Elisha and her boys,” Elstob said, highlighting the spirit of unity that characterized the event.

Beyond this heartfelt tribute, Elisha Bangma is now focused on establishing a foundation in Dixon’s name. The initiative aims to raise awareness about Dravet Syndrome, helping other families access vital medical treatment and support. “My son would have wanted nothing more than to help others,” she stated, emphasizing her commitment to ensuring that other families receive the resources they need.

Dixon’s journey was marked by challenges, as medical professionals originally predicted he would not survive past five years old after his diagnosis. Yet, he defied expectations, bringing “four more years of absolutely beautiful serenity” to his family. Elisha reflects on the joy and love Dixon shared, which will continue to inspire her efforts in his memory.
