Community Unites for Heartfelt Farewell to Young Dixon Bangma
A vibrant funeral procession composed of more than 20 trucks, vintage cars, and various vehicles honored the life of Dixon Bangma in Gore, New Zealand, on Saturday. His mother, Elisha Bangma, expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support from the community during this difficult time, noting the profound impact it had on her family.
Ms. Bangma shared that her two other children, who also live with Dravet Syndrome, were deeply moved by the turnout. “All these people showed such support for my baby boy. He was just ‘him’, and to see such support is overwhelmingly beautiful; it just means so much to us,” she said. The funeral procession was organized by Southland Hug a Rig, an organization that Dixon’s family has supported, and which aligns with his love for trucks.
A Meaningful Tribute
The community’s involvement in the procession was more than just a tribute; it was a heartfelt gesture during a trying time. “I just thought it would be a good send-off for a 9-year-old. It was something we could do, to get behind and support [the family] in that way,” stated Mrs. Elstob, one of the organizers.
The significant turnout showcased the strength and unity of the community, which Ms. Bangma highlighted as a remarkable aspect of their support. “It shows what a remarkable community I live in,” she remarked, reflecting on the love and solidarity surrounding her family.
Dixon Bangma was initially diagnosed with Dravet Syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy, and it was originally thought he may not live past the age of five. Despite those early predictions, he brought his family “four more years of absolutely beautiful serenity,” according to his mother.
Creating a Legacy
In the wake of her son’s passing, Ms. Bangma is now focused on establishing a foundation in Dixon’s name. This initiative aims to raise awareness about Dravet Syndrome, ensuring that other families have access to the best medical treatment and visibility for the condition. “My son would have wanted nothing more than to help others,” she stated, emphasizing her commitment to making a difference.
The support from the community during the funeral procession serves as a poignant reminder of the impact Dixon had on those around him and the legacy he will leave behind. As Ms. Bangma navigates this challenging time, her focus on helping others exemplifies the enduring love and resilience that characterized her son’s life.
