East Auckland Sporting Achievements Celebrated at Howick Awards

The sporting talents of East Auckland were celebrated during the annual Howick Sports Awards, held at the Howick Pakuranga Community Sports Centre on September 24, 2023. This event recognized the achievements of athletes, coaches, and volunteers who have made significant contributions to the local sports community. Organized by Amanda Dyason and sponsored by the Howick Local Board, the awards attracted a crowd of several hundred attendees.

The evening featured guest speaker and New Zealand Silver Ferns netball legend Irene van Dyk, who provided entertainment and inspiration to those present. The awards ceremony commenced with the announcement of the Administrator of the Year. Richette Rodger from the Howick Pakuranga Netball Centre received the accolade, highlighting her exceptional contributions to the sport.

Following this, the title of Masters Athlete of the Year was awarded to Ron Johnson, who was the only finalist in that category. The Coach of the Year award was presented to David Bishop of Howick Gymnastics Club. Meyer noted Bishop’s success in coaching gymnasts to victory at the 2024 New Zealand Nationals, where they secured both gold and bronze medals. His commitment extends beyond competitive coaching, as he runs inclusive programs for athletes with disabilities and younger children.

The awards then shifted focus to junior athletes, starting with the Junior Sportswoman of the Year, awarded to Jessica Ready. At just 15 years old, Ready made history as the first New Zealander to win a medal at the X Games, achieving bronze in the women’s street competition. Meyer emphasized her dominance in national competitions, winning multiple titles in skateboarding.

In the Junior Sportsman of the Year category, Dwayne Li of Paradice Ice Skating emerged as the winner. Li finished the 2024 figure skating season ranked fourth globally on the Junior Grand Prix circuit. His dedication to the sport is further underscored by his self-funded training efforts while balancing academic commitments at Macleans College.

The Sportswoman of the Year award was given to Marielle Venida, who has represented New Zealand at international events, including the World Under-20 Championships. Venida’s impressive track record includes gold at the New Zealand Senior Women’s 200 metres and numerous medals in various championships.

The Sportsman of the Year award went to Harlyn Saunoa of Pakuranga United Rugby Club. Saunoa’s remarkable year included debuting in senior rugby, being selected for the Blues under-20s team, and representing New Zealand at the U20 World Cup, where he notably scored a hat-trick against South Africa.

The evening also recognized outstanding officials and volunteers. Brett Kimpton of Pakuranga United Touch was named Official of the Year, while Chris Day of Pakuranga Athletic Club received the Volunteer of the Year award. Their contributions are pivotal in supporting the local sports landscape.

In the junior team category, the Premier 1 Netball team from Howick College took home the award, whereas the Team of the Year award recognized the Under-85kg Black Panthers from Pakuranga United Rugby Club, who triumphed in the New Zealand Rugby U85kg National Cup final.

The College of the Year award was presented to Howick College for its commitment to fostering young athletes, while the Club of the Year was awarded to Howick Pakuranga Hockey Club. Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the club has produced numerous national representatives, including five Olympians.

The final award of the night honored individuals for their long-standing service to sport. Allison Tranter, Angela Jaksic, and Bruce Moran were jointly recognized for their dedication and impact within their respective clubs.

The Howick Sports Awards showcased the rich sporting culture of East Auckland, highlighting the achievements of individuals and teams that continue to inspire future generations.
