Auckland mayoral candidate Kerrin Leoni unexpectedly withdrew from a scheduled debate at the Herald on March 15, 2024, just minutes before it was set to begin. The announcement came via an email from her campaign manager, Sharon Jensen, who did not provide an explanation for the last-minute decision at that time.

Jensen later clarified that Leoni had chosen to focus on preparing for a significant “Get Out the Vote” event planned for the following day at Aotea Square. The campaign manager had initially accepted the invitation to the debate on March 13, confirming the participation later that same day with the words “Locked in,” and reaffirming it once more on March 14.

The debate proceeded with two remaining candidates: independent candidate Eric Chuah and Rob McNeil of the Animal Justice Party. Both candidates took the opportunity to discuss their platforms and engage with voters present at the event.

Leoni has been vocal in her criticisms of the current Auckland mayor, Wayne Brown, who has also declined several invitations to participate in candidate debates. Her absence from this particular debate raises questions regarding her campaign strategy as the election approaches.

As the mayoral race intensifies, candidates are under increasing pressure to connect with the electorate. The decision to prioritize a major campaign event over a debate may reflect a tactical shift for Leoni, as she aims to mobilize support ahead of the elections. The outcome of the upcoming “Get Out the Vote” event will be closely monitored, as voter engagement plays a crucial role in the electoral process.

With Auckland residents heading to the polls soon, the dynamics of the race will likely evolve, particularly as candidates navigate public expectations and media scrutiny.
