Auckland Tennis Centre Receives $15 Million for New Roof Project
Auckland’s Tennis Centre is set to receive a significant upgrade, with a total of $15 million allocated towards the construction of a roof for the Centre Court. This funding includes a $5 million investment from the New Zealand government, announced by Minister for Tourism and Hospitality, Louise Upston. The initiative aims to enhance facilities and attract more world-class events to the region.
The funding comes from the Auckland Council’s Sport and Recreation Facilities Investment Fund, which was revealed earlier this year. This grant will enable Tennis Auckland to demolish the Robinson Grandstand at the southern end of the venue, paving the way for the long-discussed roof installation. The tennis centre, located at Stanley Street, hosts notable events such as the ASB Classic and various concerts.
Government Support for Upgraded Facilities
Upston emphasized the necessity of modern infrastructure to maintain New Zealand’s appeal as a destination for international events. “If we want to continue to attract world-class events to New Zealand, we need to have world-class facilities to go along with them,” she stated. She expressed enthusiasm for the project, noting that it would provide “more certainty for organisers, players, and fans alike.”
The roof initiative is the first investment announced as part of the government’s broader $70 million Major Events and Tourism Package. This funding aims to bolster visitor numbers, energize the events sector, and stimulate economic activity across the country. Upston highlighted that improving existing infrastructure, such as the tennis arena, would enhance associated activities and overall visitor experience.
The construction of the new roof is projected to be completed by 2027, although Prime Minister Christopher Luxon expressed his hope for an earlier launch by January of that year. “It’s important to keep stepping up the standard,” he noted, indicating a commitment to elevating New Zealand’s sporting facilities.
Impact on Local Communities
The investment in the Tennis Centre is expected to have a ripple effect on local communities and businesses. Upston assured that further decisions regarding infrastructure improvements, particularly around popular attractions like cycle trails, would be made to benefit various regions across New Zealand.
As construction progresses, the anticipated roofing project stands to enhance the overall experience for athletes and spectators alike, solidifying Auckland’s status as a prime location for sporting and entertainment events. The development reflects a broader commitment by the government to invest in vital infrastructure that supports both tourism and local economies.
