Taranaki Teens Thrive with Home-Based Business Ventures

Two enterprising teenagers from Taranaki, New Zealand, have successfully launched their own home-based businesses, drawing support from their extended family. Instead of pursuing traditional paths, 18-year-old Ashley Howard and her younger sister, 17-year-old Caitlin Howard, have turned their family farm into a hub of entrepreneurial activity.

Ashley founded Cake Obsession late last year, specializing in custom celebration cakes, cupcakes, and various sweet treats. Her business quickly gained traction, prompting her to partner with friend Charlotte Muggeridge. Together, they often work late into the night to fulfill urgent orders, highlighting their commitment to quality and customer satisfaction.

Ashley’s passion for baking began at the young age of seven. As her mother, Diane Howard, explained, “We were out on the farm and we mainly had healthy food, so the kids were desperate for sugar.” Over time, Ashley expanded her baking skills by creating cakes for family and friends, ultimately transforming her hobby into a thriving business. Alongside her baking, she also maintains a part-time job at a local restaurant.

Caitlin’s venture, Egg Obsession, focuses on selling eggs from pasture-raised hens. She launched her chicken farming business in February 2023 after testing a smaller flock. Although she is not yet old enough to be a director of her company, Caitlin has taken on approximately $150,000 in debt to establish her enterprise, with significant backing from her parents.

Diane reflects on her own experience, stating, “I went 50:50 sharemilking at Pihama with my father’s help when I was 18. I had debt before I got a wage.” The family runs a closed herd of 230 cows on a high-input system, which seamlessly transitioned to accommodate the chickens. The pasture-raised chickens enjoy a natural outdoor environment, moving daily to fresh grass, in contrast to the conditions of commercial free-range birds.

Setting up the chicken farm involved rigorous planning to meet biosecurity standards, as well as practical construction. Caitlin’s grandfather, Ray Collins, along with his friend, built a larger, solar-powered chicken caravan. This innovative structure features hydraulic capabilities for easy movement with a tractor and is secured with electric netting to protect the chickens from predators.

The community has shown strong support for the sisters’ efforts. Diane noted, “People have been incredible; they have really invested in the girls. There are a lot of good people out there – they are really kind.” The family dynamic has played a crucial role in managing the demands of both businesses. With everyone pitching in, including Caitlin’s partner, Conrad Pohe, and Ashley’s partner, Kodie Green, the household operates efficiently.

Every evening, the family gathers for dinner, creating a vibrant atmosphere. Diane remarked, “There are 10 of us for tea every night. It’s heaps of fun – it’s really lively.” The cooperative spirit among family members ensures that both businesses flourish while maintaining their agricultural operations.

The sisters sell their products at the Taranaki Farmers’ Market every Sunday and accept orders online and via phone. Their venture captures the essence of modern entrepreneurship while also honoring traditional family values.
