Job Market Shows Resilience: Key Sectors Thrive in NZ
The job market in New Zealand is facing challenges, with unemployment rates rising and many individuals struggling to secure employment. Despite these difficulties, certain roles are proving to be resilient, offering stability even as the economy weakens. According to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, job advertisements declined by 7.6 percent in the year leading up to the June quarter. This decrease, while significant, marks an improvement compared to the 21.7 percent drop seen in the previous quarter.
Among the few sectors experiencing growth are healthcare and primary industries. Recruiters report that demand remains steady in various fields. Data from Seek indicates that the most advertised positions currently include sales account managers (3,533 listings), business development managers (over 2,500), accountants (over 2,300), and electricians (over 2,100). Additionally, roles such as nurses, support workers, administration staff, sales assistants, and chefs are also in high demand.
Healthcare Sector Stays Strong Amid Economic Challenges
Blair Chapman, a senior economist at Seek, highlighted demographic trends that are expected to drive hiring, particularly in healthcare. He noted that with an estimated 7.5 percent of the New Zealand population now over the age of 75 and another 9 percent over 65, the demand for support workers and nurses will likely continue to grow. “The need for care is increasing,” he stated.
The recovery of the tourism sector is further contributing to job opportunities in hospitality. Chapman mentioned a rise in visitor numbers from Australia, which has boosted demand for chefs and retail workers. Hayley Pickard, managing director of Fortitude Group, confirmed that jobs in healthcare and aged care consistently remain robust, alongside roles in technology and education. She did note, however, that sectors such as construction, engineering, and manufacturing have experienced a slowdown due to economic pressures.
Unexpected Resilience in Utilities and Mining
Some sectors may be surprising in terms of their stability during economic downturns. Gareth Kiernan, chief forecaster at Infometrics, pointed out that utilities and mining have historically fared well in challenging times. “Households and businesses will always need electricity, water, and telecommunications,” Kiernan explained. He added that mining activities often persist even when economies weaken, especially when global demand for commodities like gold or coal remains strong.
Kiernan also noted that areas such as healthcare, social assistance, and education are typically less affected by economic fluctuations. Interestingly, downturns can sometimes lead to increased demand for tertiary education as young people postpone entering a weak job market. Additionally, parts of agriculture and food manufacturing can remain stable if export demand stays solid. Although central government roles are facing cutbacks, they still offer relative stability compared to the private sector.
Despite the current economic climate, there is a sense of cautious optimism among some employers. Pickard shared that she has begun to notice a resurgence of confidence. “I’m slowly noticing clients with an optimistic outlook for 2026. Many want to weather 2025, keep the lights on, and then look to the future with renewed confidence,” she said.
In summary, while New Zealand’s job market is under pressure, certain sectors continue to thrive. Healthcare, hospitality, utilities, and education are proving to be resilient areas, providing opportunities even as overall job advertisements decline. The adaptability of these sectors may offer hope to job seekers navigating a challenging economic landscape.
