Two residents have pledged $500 each towards the funding of a portable speed camera aimed at curbing reckless driving on Banks Peninsula. This initiative seeks to address long-standing concerns surrounding noisy vehicles and speeding, which have been troubling residents near Lyttelton Harbour for decades.

Community Meeting Sparks Support

Organised by Dave Dunlay, a candidate for the Banks Peninsula Ward city council, a meeting at the Lyttelton Recreation Centre attracted approximately 60 attendees. The discussion focused on a fundraising campaign to cover the $4,300 cost of a two-month trial of the speed camera. Dunlay expressed optimism about the initiative, noting that feedback from attendees was encouraging.

The proposed camera would be strategically positioned around the harbour to collect data on anti-social driving. This evidence will be presented to local police and relevant authorities for potential enforcement actions. Dunlay hopes to have the camera operational by the end of the year.

Fundraising Efforts Underway

Many community members have already stepped forward, expressing a willingness to support the trial financially. In addition to individual donations, Dunlay is actively seeking sponsorships to help fund the initiative. The collaborative effort demonstrates a strong community commitment to improving road safety in the area.

After the two-month trial, the gathered evidence will be presented to the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, local city council, and police. The aim is to develop a permanent solution to mitigate speeding and enhance safety for residents around Lyttelton Harbour.

As discussions continue, the community remains hopeful that this initiative will lead to significant improvements in road safety and a reduction in disruptive driving behaviors.
