Centrestage Teacher Louise Wilkie Finalist for Prestigious Scholarship

Louise Wilkie, a dedicated performing arts educator from Centrestage Youth Theatre in Ōrewa, has been named a finalist for the 2026 Travel Gang Theatre Educator Scholarship. This highly competitive award recognises exceptional theatre educators across Australia and New Zealand. Wilkie is among ten finalists competing for this honour, which includes a travel package valued at A$14,000.
Scholarship Experience and Its Benefits
If selected, Wilkie will embark on a transformative journey in January 2026. She will join a team of educators to mentor 32 aspiring performers, collectively known as the 2026 Aussie All-Stars, at the international Junior Theatre Festival (JTF) in Atlanta, USA. The scholarship programme spans 19 days, starting with eight days in New York City for rehearsals, Broadway shows, and workshops. Following this, participants will spend three days at the festival in Atlanta and conclude with an eight-day experience in Los Angeles, which includes participation in the Disneyland Performing Arts Workshop.
Wilkie has a rich background in the performing arts, having grown up within the Centrestage Youth Theatre community. She is not only an experienced choreographer and director but also holds a Master’s degree in Dance Movement Therapy. Wilkie is the co-founder of Smoky Mirror Arts Company, an organisation that supports rangatahi with disabilities. At Centrestage Youth Theatre, she facilitates weekly performing arts classes for students aged 5 to 18, focusing on inclusive programmes that foster confidence, creativity, and belonging among young people from diverse backgrounds.
Goals and Aspirations
Wilkie applied for the Travel Gang Theatre Educator Scholarship to enhance her understanding of theatre education on a global scale. She expressed her desire to learn from industry leaders and return with innovative ideas and international connections that can be adapted for New Zealand’s diverse youth.
The Travel Gang Theatre Educator Scholarship is delivered in collaboration with Music Theatre International (MTI) Australasia, Junior Theatre Festival Australia, and JTF New Zealand. Mike King, co-director of Travel Gang, praised the high calibre of this year’s applicants and recognised the significant contributions of the ten finalists to the performing arts community.
“These educators foster innovation and growth in their communities. This scholarship is about honouring their impact,” said King.
The final winner of the scholarship will be announced in mid-October 2025. King emphasised the importance of recognising teachers like Wilkie, who often go unacknowledged for their dedication and the profound impact they have on their students. “The Travel Gang Theatre Educator Scholarship is our way of honouring them on an international platform,” he added.
