Alliance Group Launches Heat Pump System to Slash Emissions
Alliance Group has unveiled a new heat pump system designed to significantly reduce carbon emissions at its Mataura facility in New Zealand. According to the company’s energy manager, Brett Eades, the installation of three heat pumps is expected to cut annual carbon emissions by over 6,400 tonnes, which is equivalent to removing approximately 3,250 cars from the roads each year.
The innovative system uniquely harnesses heat extracted from the Mataura River, enhancing the plant’s efficiency. Eades emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainability and decarbonisation. “This heat pump system alone will eliminate around 60% of the site’s carbon emissions,” he stated.
Innovative Integration of Systems
The upgrade includes significant enhancements to the heat plant’s efficiency, particularly through the reconfiguration of its hot-water system. Previously, refrigeration and heating systems operated independently. Now, they have been integrated, allowing for the recovery of waste heat from the refrigeration system, in addition to utilizing heat from the river. This integration posed a complex engineering challenge but has yielded substantial benefits.
Eades noted that the Mataura project follows the successful installation of similar high-temperature heat pumps at the company’s facilities in Nelson, Lorneville, and Pukeuri. “While we used the same heat pump technology at Mataura as we did at Pukeuri, the system integration was very different,” he explained. “Thanks to learnings from previous installations, this commissioning went very smoothly with minimal teething issues.”
Future Plans and Funding Support
The project is currently in its second phase, which involves designing a smaller, energy-efficient boiler system powered by electricity or biomass. Upon completion of this phase and the decommissioning of the existing coal-fired boiler, the combined systems are projected to reduce emissions by a total of 14,460 tonnes annually.
The overall investment for the Mataura initiative amounts to $6.2 million, with $750,000 sourced from the Government Investment in Decarbonising Industry fund. This financial backing underscores the government’s commitment to supporting industries in their transition to more sustainable practices.
Alliance Group’s proactive approach to emission reduction not only highlights its dedication to environmental responsibility but also sets a precedent for other companies in the industry. As sustainability becomes increasingly crucial in global operations, initiatives like this could play a pivotal role in shaping a more eco-friendly future.
