Blackhead Quarries Delivers 2,400 Tonnes of Sand to Wellington Beach
Blackhead Quarries is transporting 2,400 tonnes of sand from Dunedin to Oriental Bay in Wellington to replenish the beach, which has experienced significant sand loss over the past decade. This marks the second occasion the company has undertaken this project; it previously supplied sand in 2015. The replenishment is part of ongoing efforts to maintain the beach’s integrity and aesthetic appeal.
The Wellington City Council selected this particular sand due to its desirable golden color and coarse grading, qualities deemed essential for the project. According to a council spokesperson, the sand’s characteristics were critical in ensuring it would withstand the local conditions, particularly the strong winds that frequently affect the area.
Transport for this operation relies on KiwiRail, utilizing 20-tonne containers to facilitate the journey. The process is expected to involve multiple trips to deliver the full amount of sand. The total cost of the replenishment project is estimated at $790,000, a necessary investment to restore the beach’s natural beauty and functionality.
This initiative represents the second replenishment of Oriental Bay since the original enhancement project completed in 2003, which saw the placement of approximately 16,100 cubic meters of sand from Golden Bay. Notably, the source quarry at Separation Point has ceased operations, necessitating the current transport arrangements.
Natural coastal processes typically result in the loss of between 100 and 400 cubic meters of sand each year, underscoring the importance of such replenishment efforts. Mr. Pellowe from Blackhead Quarries indicated that the new sand’s density plays a crucial role in its ability to remain in place against Wellington’s winds, ensuring the beach remains a welcoming destination for both residents and visitors.
As the project unfolds, the Wellington community looks forward to seeing Oriental Bay restored to its former glory, continuing its legacy as a popular recreational spot.
