Fonterra Launches $1,500 Incentive for Farmer-Shareholders

Fonterra has introduced an innovative On Farm Services incentive programme aimed at its qualifying farmer-shareholders. This new initiative offers a subsidy of approximately $1,500 per year for farmers meeting the cooperative’s baseline performance and efficiency standards. The funds are designed for investments in on-farm technology and services that can enhance productivity and sustainability.
The programme supports a range of tools and services that focus on animal performance, pasture management, and data optimisation. Farmers can access advanced animal performance tools from genetics companies, as well as technology that improves carbon sequestration through on-farm planting. Notably, the initiative includes apps and dashboards that leverage artificial intelligence and satellite imagery to help farmers manage and optimise pasture efficiently.
Data optimisation is a crucial aspect of the programme. With the influx of information from various on-farm touchpoints, specific services are available to aggregate this data into actionable insights, enabling farmers to make informed decisions. Additionally, the scheme promotes animal testing for better monitoring of livestock health and performance.
Impact on Farming Efficiency and Technology Adoption
The launch of this incentive programme is significant for the farming community, as it provides financial support that can alleviate on-farm costs while encouraging experimentation with new technologies. Farmers are increasingly turning to tech solutions to address regulatory and compliance challenges in their operations. A 2023 survey conducted by DairyNZ revealed that 18% of farmers now utilise cow wearables, such as smart monitoring devices, compared to just 3% in 2018. This surge translates to over 820,000 cows equipped with these devices, reflecting a growing trend towards technological integration in daily farming practices.
Fonterra’s reputation as a producer of high-quality, efficient milk has attracted the attention of major food conglomerates, including Mars and Nestlé, who are contributing to the funding of this subsidy. This collaboration enhances the programme’s potential impact on the dairy industry and supports farmers in navigating an increasingly competitive global market.
The On Farm Services incentive initiative underscores Fonterra’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in agriculture. As farmers face evolving challenges, such as stringent environmental regulations and the need for improved productivity, programmes like this provide essential support to ensure the future viability of farming operations. With the backing of industry leaders and a clear focus on technological advancement, Fonterra is setting a precedent that may influence farming practices worldwide.
