GCCIA Delegation Explores Al-Kharsaah Solar Power Plant in Qatar

A delegation from the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) visited the Al-Kharsaah Solar Power Plant in Qatar, accompanied by participants of the workshop titled “Assessing the Reliability of Renewable Energy Sources in the Cooperation Council Countries.” This visit highlighted the advancements in renewable energy within the region.
Insights into Solar Power Innovations
The tour took place during a workshop organized by the GCCIA in Doha. Attendees were offered insights into the latest technologies in operation, maintenance, and production at Al-Kharsaah, which is the first solar power facility in Qatar. The plant has a capacity of 800 megawatts (MW) and began supplying electricity to the national grid in June 2022.
Since the launch of Al-Kharsaah, QatarEnergy has expanded its solar initiatives. The company has developed the Ras Laffan and Mesaieed solar power plants, increasing the nation’s renewable energy production capacity to 1,675 MW. Currently, QatarEnergy is constructing the Dukhan Solar Power Plant, which is expected to boost the country’s total solar generation capacity to over 4,000 MW.
QatarEnergy’s Commitment to Renewable Solutions
Established in 2017, QatarEnergy Renewable Solutions focuses on financing, building, operating, and maintaining solar power facilities and marketing the electricity generated from these sources within Qatar. The company owns 60% of the Siraj (1) Company, which operates the Al-Kharsaah plant.
The Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority plays a crucial role in the electricity interconnection project among GCC countries, aiming to enhance regional energy collaboration and reliability. The recent visit underscores ongoing efforts to improve renewable energy infrastructure and promote sustainability in the region.
