Masterton’s Central Upgrade Promises Enhanced Retail Experience
Central Masterton is preparing for a significant transformation set to commence in early March 2024. The Masterton District Council has announced plans for extensive upgrades that aim to enhance both pedestrian access and the overall shopping experience in the area.
According to a spokesperson for the Masterton District Council, while specific details are still under discussion, the project will prioritize maintaining pedestrian access to local retail outlets throughout the construction period. “Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the project, and the community is encouraged to keep shopping local while the work is happening,” the spokesperson stated.
To support both retailers and shoppers during the construction phase, several initiatives are being planned. These include workshops, advertising, informative signage, window cleaning, and promotional giveaways. Preliminary discussions are underway regarding a potential “shop and win competition,” in collaboration with Brent Gare and the team at Mediaworks, although details are still being finalized.
The Queen Street upgrade focuses on critical infrastructure improvements, such as the replacement of an aging water main, road resurfacing, and the reconstruction of footpaths. These enhancements are designed to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians. The construction is expected to last approximately six months, beginning after the conclusion of the Golden Shears and Shearing World Championships.
Contractors will undertake a comprehensive overhaul of the footpath area, which includes the removal and replacement of existing bins, benches, and trees. The project will be executed in three distinct sections, stretching from Jackson Street to Park Street, with the final construction schedule to be confirmed. As the work progresses, information about road closures will be communicated through the council’s website and the Antenno app. Free public parking maps will be made available at participating stores and the council office.
Maseina Koneferenisi, the Council’s Group Manager of Infrastructure and Assets, emphasized the importance of the project for the town’s future. “This upgrade will deliver secure water infrastructure while working alongside local retailers to shape the CBD’s look and feel,” she explained.
Koneferenisi noted that the council has been actively engaging with the business community to understand their vision for Queen Street. “The recent business summit initiated discussions about local aspirations as part of our ‘Our Future Our Story’ project and the Masterton Retail and Commercial Strategy,” she added. “This upgrade provides an opportunity to implement some of those ideas.”
The conversations with retailers will continue as the project develops, ensuring that the upgrades align with customer needs and enhance Queen Street as a vibrant place for both shopping and business. The community’s involvement and support during this upgrade will play a vital role in ensuring the success of the initiative.
