Nadia McLean Takes Helm at AbacusBio, Emphasizes Inclusivity
Nadia McLean has been appointed as the new group managing director of AbacusBio, succeeding Dr. Peter Amer. Based in Dunedin, McLean is committed to fostering an inclusive workplace culture, emphasizing that success in the agribusiness sector does not solely depend on formal science qualifications. “Those without science qualifications are just as valuable. We need everybody,” she stated, highlighting her belief in diverse contributions to the team.
McLean, a Dunedin native with a background in veterinary nursing, grew up with a strong connection to rural life, thanks in part to her family’s farming background in the Cardrona Valley. Her career began with a maternity leave cover position at AgResearch’s Invermay site, where she immersed herself in various scientific fields, including molecular biology and genomics. This experience proved essential for her professional development and understanding of multiple species.
Over nearly 15 years at Invermay, McLean steadily advanced her career, eventually moving to a prominent farming business before joining AbacusBio as a consultant 13 years ago. Familiar with many of her colleagues from her earlier career, she quickly adapted to her new role. As AbacusBio expanded internationally, McLean took on a management position, overseeing operations in the United Kingdom, where the company opened an office, and more recently in Canada and Australia.
As the firm continues to grow, McLean recognizes the importance of managing both people and culture. “With considerable growth in the business, my key focus is on building teams while maintaining our close-knit atmosphere,” she remarked. Despite having approximately 50 employees, she feels that AbacusBio still retains the spirit of a small business.
AbacusBio is a finalist in the science and technology category of The Grand Business South Awards, scheduled for later this month. McLean views this recognition as an opportunity to reflect on the company’s journey. Having acquired a shareholding in the company three years ago—a long-held aspiration—she feels the weight of responsibility to uphold the legacy of the leaders who came before her. “There are big footsteps to follow, but I will bring different strengths to the role,” she noted.
Balancing her professional responsibilities with family life, McLean is the mother of an eight-year-old daughter and twin five-year-old sons. She credits her supportive partner for helping her manage the demands of her career. Evening hours often become a time for connecting with AbacusBio’s international team, emphasizing the company’s commitment to a family-friendly work environment. “Demonstrating that we value family is quite powerful,” she concluded, reinforcing her vision for an inclusive and supportive workplace culture.
