Record $5.6 Million Tuna Sold at Tokyo Fish Market Sparks Excitement
A single tuna has sold for a record price of $5.6 million at a Tokyo fish market, making waves in both culinary and economic circles. The tuna, weighing 243 kg (approximately 536 pounds), was acquired by Kiyomura Corp, the operator of the well-known sushi restaurant chain Sushizanmai. This transaction took place on January 5, 2024, and the hefty sum surpasses Kiyomura’s previous record of 333.6 million yen set in 2019.
During a media interaction, Kiyoshi Kimura, the chief of Kiyomura, expressed hope for Japan’s economic recovery, referencing the newly established government under Sanae Takaichi, Japan’s first female prime minister. Kimura stated, “I hope the economy will get better this year. The Takaichi administration pledged to work, work, work, so Sushizanmai will work, work, work too. I hope this bid will cheer everyone up.”
The bidding process drew significant attention, with Kimura noting he anticipated a winning bid closer to 400 million or 300 million yen. Instead, the final bid exceeded 500 million yen, resulting in what he described as a surprising outcome. Known as the “Tuna King,” Kimura has a reputation for making high-profile purchases at the annual tuna auction, underscoring his commitment to the sushi industry.
Following the auction, the giant tuna was transported to Sushizanmai’s flagship branch, where it was carefully sliced and distributed to the restaurant’s outlets across Japan. Kimura confirmed that the tuna dishes would be sold to customers at the usual prices, making this exceptional fish accessible to sushi enthusiasts throughout the country.
This record-breaking sale not only highlights the culinary significance of tuna in Japan but also reflects broader economic sentiments. The event serves as a barometer for consumer confidence, as the high bid suggests an optimistic outlook among restaurateurs and diners alike. As the nation adjusts to changing economic conditions, the enthusiasm surrounding this tuna sale may offer a glimpse of the resilience within Japan’s vibrant food culture.
