Turkiye and Azerbaijan Sign Major Energy Cooperation Deal
Turkiye and Azerbaijan have formalized a significant agreement aimed at enhancing their energy collaboration, with Azerbaijan committing to supply 33 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Turkiye. This deal, which marks a vital step in bilateral relations, is set to commence in 2029 and will unfold over a period of 15 years.
Details of the Agreement
The agreement, disclosed by Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, specifies that the gas supply will be delivered at a rate of 2.25 billion cubic meters annually. The natural gas will be sourced from the Absheron gas field in Azerbaijan, reflecting the strategic importance of this resource for both nations.
Bayraktar emphasized that the gas will be transported through a pipeline that crosses the Caspian Sea, underscoring the commitment of both countries to deepen their energy ties. This initiative is anticipated to strengthen Turkiye’s position as a key energy hub in the region.
Future Developments in Energy Infrastructure
In March 2025, Bayraktar announced the commissioning of the Turkiye-Azerbaijan gas pipeline, which is considered a critical element of the energy cooperation framework between the two nations. The pipeline spans approximately 80 kilometers and is expected to facilitate the efficient transfer of natural gas from Azerbaijan to Turkiye.
This agreement not only enhances energy security for Turkiye but also solidifies Azerbaijan’s role as a crucial supplier in the European energy market. The collaboration between these two countries is indicative of their shared vision for energy independence and regional stability.
The deal represents a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to strengthen economic ties and energy cooperation within the region. As both nations continue to explore opportunities for collaboration, the future of their energy partnership looks promising.
