Waitaki Council Sets Ambitious Goals for 2024 Amid Changes
The Waitaki District Council has outlined its key priorities for 2024, focusing on securing approval for its water services delivery plan and navigating significant local government reforms. Alongside these efforts, the Council aims to develop a comprehensive long-term plan, all while managing daily operations effectively. With affordability as a central concern, the Council acknowledges that making difficult decisions will be necessary to ensure the community’s needs are met.
Embracing Opportunities for Community Improvement
The upcoming year presents unique opportunities for the Waitaki District. According to Council officials, the current emphasis on reshaping local government structure provides a vital chance to rethink service delivery. This initiative aims to create a more agile and responsive council, which is particularly crucial during the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. As the Council stated, “This is an important chance to reset and ensure we’re delivering real value.”
Yet, the path ahead is not without its challenges. The Council faces a significant task in managing the rapid pace of change, which includes tight deadlines and complex policy shifts. Engaging effectively with the community, neighboring councils, and local iwi will be essential for success. The Council emphasized that “getting it right is critical” for the future of the district.
Collaboration as a Core Strategy
To navigate these changes, the Waitaki District Council plans to prioritize collaboration. Officials intend to engage with community focus groups, as well as participate in discussions with the Otago and Canterbury mayoral forums and local iwi. This collaborative approach aims to foster informed and transparent conversations that reflect the diverse needs of the district.
On a personal note, a Council representative shared their New Year’s resolutions, emphasizing the importance of fitness for personal well-being. For the district, the focus is on maintaining stability amidst changes, while the Council seeks to cultivate strong leadership and a united team where every member’s voice is heard.
Reflecting on the holiday season, the representative described a rejuvenating break spent biking and paddleboarding around Oamaru Harbour, which provided an opportunity to recharge for the busy year ahead.
As the Council looks forward, several major projects are nearing completion, including the new events centre, the extension of the Forrester Gallery, and the Kakanui Bridge. These developments are expected to enhance community engagement and provide a significant boost to the district’s infrastructure.
With an action-packed year ahead, the Waitaki District Council is poised to tackle the challenges and opportunities that 2024 will bring.
