Arrowtown to Celebrate Historic Tree with Dramatic Re-enactment

Next weekend, Arrowtown will host a theatrical re-enactment inspired by the children’s book, The Mary Cotter Tree, authored by Tony Hanning from Dunedin. This dramatization marks a celebration of a local historical treasure, the sycamore tree that continues to thrive at the corner of the library. The tree has a rich history, having been planted in 1867 by Irish immigrants Frances and Richard Cotter as a tribute to their daughter Mary, who was just 20 months old at the time.
Hanning, whose maternal grandmother was one of Mary Cotter’s sisters, has given his blessing for the adaptation, which has been crafted by local resident Rozy Winstone. Winstone, who is also directing the performance, established the SkyTop Children’s Theatre last year to foster local drama initiatives. Her passion for the arts and community is evident, as she is also involved with the Arrowtown Autumn Festival.
The play will take place at Arrowtown’s Lakes District Museum on September 20 and 21, 2023, starting at 11:30 AM. Attendees are encouraged to gather at the museum’s front steps, where they will be divided into three groups. Each group will be guided to different sets by children portraying characters from the story, creating an immersive experience for all participants.
Winstone has collaborated with local sculptor Fiona Garlick, who incorporates sycamore seed motifs in her artwork, further emphasizing the cultural significance of the tree. Tickets for the event can be purchased at the museum for $10 for adults, while children can attend free of charge. Proceeds from the ticket sales will support the museum.
This engaging event not only highlights the historical importance of the Mary Cotter Tree but also promotes community involvement and appreciation for local heritage.
