A unique exhibition featuring the works of some of New Zealand’s top photographers is set to launch in Auckland, with the aim of raising funds for a colleague battling cancer. The event, titled Light+Shade, is organized by Jason Oxenham, who has enlisted the help of 32 fellow photojournalists to contribute their images for this important cause.

Oxenham, who has dedicated over 30 years to photojournalism, is currently undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer. After exhausting available treatment options in New Zealand, he traveled to Shanghai for CAR-T therapy. “With no funded treatment options left after more than five years fighting this cancer, I made the decision to seek treatment abroad,” he stated. “I’m back from China and the medical numbers are looking very positive. But I still have fundraising to do.”

The exhibition will showcase 70 framed images selected from contributions by the participating photographers. Among them are eight winners of the prestigious Voyager Media Awards’ Photograph of the Year title, collectively holding 17 awards. Oxenham noted that all contributors are friends willing to support him during this challenging time.

The photographs span a diverse range of subjects, including a striking image captured by renowned photographer Andrew Cornaga, depicting children playing football in Daveyton township, South Africa, during preparations for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. This highlights not only the talent within the local photojournalism community but also the spirit of camaraderie that drives the event.

Framed and unframed prints will be available for sale during the exhibition, with proceeds directly supporting Oxenham’s ongoing medical expenses. Permission to sell these works has been granted by various news media outlets, including Stuff, NZME, Getty Images, and Photosport, all of whom Oxenham has collaborated with throughout his career.

Event Details and Community Engagement

Light+Shade will run from September 5 to September 14, 2023, at Gallery 154, located at Level 2, 154 Queen Street, in Auckland’s central business district. The exhibition will be open to the public with free entry, operating from midday to 6 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends. This initiative not only serves to raise funds but also aims to bring the community together through the appreciation of photojournalism.

As part of the exhibition, Oxenham will also present a photo essay titled Postcards from China, featuring 12 images taken during his medical treatment in Shanghai. This personal project underscores the emotional and physical journey he has experienced throughout his battle with cancer.

This exhibition represents not just a fundraiser but also a celebration of the resilience and support within the photography community. As Oxenham puts it, “This will be a special event showcasing amazing talent and generosity.”
