Banksy Exhibition Set to Captivate Christchurch This Summer

The acclaimed artist Banksy will have his works showcased at the Te Pae Convention Centre in Christchurch, New Zealand, as part of an exhibition titled The Art of Banksy. Opening on December 17 and running until January 27, 2024, the exhibition will not be open on public holidays. This event promises to attract art enthusiasts by displaying his iconic pieces and offering a comprehensive insight into his creative processes.
The Art of Banksy has already reached over 1.5 million visitors across 20 cities globally. The exhibition in Christchurch will feature an extensive collection of prints, canvases, unique works, and intriguing ephemera. Among the highlights will be seminal pieces that catapulted Banksy to international fame, including the Girl with Balloon, presented in four different color variations, one of which is a rare Gold Edition.
In addition to these iconic artworks, attendees will have the opportunity to view the original Flower Thrower and learn about the origins of this famous image through a video interview with Banksy’s former girlfriend, Leonie Laws.
Anticipation Builds for Unique Summer Experience
The exhibition’s curator, Boersma, expressed excitement about bringing this expanded collection to Christchurch. “Following a hugely successful 19-city global tour and two years in London, we’re very excited to bring this larger-than-ever collection to Christchurch,” Boersma stated. “For the last nine years, we have been working with collectors to expand the collection, from 70 works in Auckland in 2018 to over 150 authenticated and genuine works now—no replicas, just the real deal.”
Te Pae’s general manager, Ross Steele, described the exhibition as a once-in-a-lifetime event. “This is the chance for art lovers to experience something incredibly unique this summer—whether you are a long-time Banksy fan or curious about the story behind some of these fascinating works,” Steele noted. He emphasized that this exhibition is an unmissable opportunity to engage closely with Banksy’s art.
“This event exemplifies the versatility of our venue and underscores our commitment to providing local audiences with access to world-class experiences,” Steele added.
As anticipation grows, Christchurch prepares to welcome art lovers from across the region, looking forward to a summer filled with creativity and inspiration through the lens of one of the most enigmatic artists of our time.
