Bookarama Empowers Community Through Second-Hand Treasures
A unique community event, Bookarama, is set to take place from October 1-5, 2023, in Howick, New Zealand. This initiative gathers donated books, puzzles, games, and CDs to raise funds for local charities, schools, and community projects. By giving these items a second chance, Bookarama aims to promote literacy and sustainability while fostering community spirit.
The event, organized by the Rotary Club of Howick, relies heavily on the dedication of over 20 volunteers who commit their time and energy to ensure its success. During a recent visit to one of the collection points, I observed volunteers, including Carole Ansley and Glenice Yeoman, meticulously sorting through towering stacks of donations. Items are categorized and prepared for transport, creating an organized system that ensures a smooth setup process.
Volunteers collect donations through various drop-off points and a pickup service. Each item undergoes careful inspection; special finds are even highlighted to attract collectors. Notable past discoveries include Sir Douglas Mawson’s Journal, linked to the famed Australian explorer. The journal was sold to an Australian museum, ensuring its historical significance is preserved.
Bookarama serves a dual purpose: it promotes reading while preventing waste. Books that do not find new homes are donated to local schools or earmarked for future events, aligning with the initiative’s commitment to sustainability. Items that cannot be saved are sent for paper recycling, further minimizing the environmental impact.
The event brings together individuals from various age groups, from teenagers to seniors, showcasing a vibrant community effort. On setup day, volunteers collaborate to transport and arrange thousands of books, creating a welcoming environment for attendees. Community organizations, such as the Coastguard, also lend their support, emphasizing the collective effort behind Bookarama.
Funds raised during the event directly benefit the local community. Proceeds support initiatives such as Trees for Survival, local schools, and leadership programs like the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA). Additionally, the funds assist families in need through food and blanket donations, demonstrating the tangible impact of every dollar raised.
Bookarama is more than just a book sale; it embodies the spirit of community, sustainability, and generosity. Residents of Howick and surrounding areas are invited to participate, whether by purchasing books, donating items, or simply expressing gratitude to the volunteers. This event provides an opportunity for everyone to contribute to a greater cause while enjoying the pleasure of discovering new literary treasures.
As the event approaches, the enthusiasm within the community is palpable. Bookarama not only aims to sell books but also to inspire connections and foster a sense of belonging. It serves as a reminder that every item has value and that together, the community can create lasting change.
