Matthias Balzat, a prominent cellist, has returned to New Zealand to join the acclaimed NZTrio, filling the position vacated by Ashley Brown earlier this year. Balzat, who relocated back to Auckland from Dusseldorf in August, is currently touring the country with the trio as part of their final program for the 2025 season. This gig, which highlights the trio’s commitment to promoting contemporary works, was the sole reason for his return, given the world-class standards set by his new colleagues, Somi Kim and Amalia Hall.

Balzat has spent more than six years in Germany, where he experienced significant musical growth and cultural enrichment. Reflecting on his time there, he noted, “That was quite a special course, one which allowed me to spend more one-on-one time with my professor.” His studies provided him with a more hands-on approach to music, which he credits for shaping his performance projects.

As he prepares for his upcoming performances, Balzat recalls a particularly memorable concert during his final exams in Dusseldorf. He performed the Britten Cello Symphony with a German orchestra, an experience imbued with nostalgia as he anticipated returning home. “The impact of that particular piece, which was already one of my favourites, made it an unforgettable experience,” he stated.

Balzat’s musical journey began at the tender age of three, inspired by his mother, a piano teacher, who encouraged all seven of her children to engage with music. He described her as a “superwoman,” dedicating countless hours to their musical education. This early exposure laid a strong foundation for his future pursuits, leading him to explore the technical limits of the cello and discover its organic connection to human expression.

At just 14 years old, Balzat began university studies, demonstrating a competitive spirit that propelled him forward. “There was a slight competitive nature in me that was very goal-driven,” he admitted. His academic path required a move to Hamilton, where he could live with his sister, a violinist, and study alongside her. His time with renowned cellist James Tennant further fueled his motivation to excel in his craft.

Balzat completed his degree at Waikato University by age 17, during which he achieved notable success in various competitions, including the New Zealand National Concerto Competition and the ROSL Chamber Music Scholarship Competition. His accomplishments allowed him to perform with esteemed orchestras such as the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the Christchurch Symphony on his visits home.

His time in Europe expanded his horizons further, as he performed with the Harbin Symphony and Neue Philharmonie-Westfalen, and secured victories in prestigious competitions like the International Wallace Cello Competition. Despite the challenges of traveling, Balzat has learned to adapt, leaving his cello in Europe while managing his commitments with NZTrio. “So that certainly saves a bunch of fees and makes it more practical for me to travel a little bit more lightly packed,” he remarked.

Balzat enjoys the unique communication of chamber music, finding it allows for a deeper connection with his instrument. “When you’re doing a solo, there’s much more of an opportunity to dive inward into your own playing,” he explained. As he matures as a musician, he finds himself increasingly drawn to pieces that convey profound human emotions, especially from the romantic repertoire.

He remains committed to contemporary music, expressing excitement about performing new works. “I feel like I’ve gone through all of the standard repertoire anyway,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of bringing fresh compositions to the stage.

As he prepares for future performances, Balzat emphasizes the need for physical and mental readiness. He advocates for the benefits of nature, which he believes inspires creativity and provides a valuable source of motivation. The rich landscapes and supportive community of New Zealand offer him a renewed sense of inspiration since returning home.

Looking ahead, Balzat will perform with the NZTrio in the Hypnotique concert at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery tomorrow at 7 PM. His journey back to New Zealand has not only allowed him to reconnect with family and friends but also to continue contributing to the vibrant musical landscape he holds dear.
