Circa Theatre’s Robin Hood Delivers Laughter and Satire in 2025 Pantomime
The latest production of *Robin Hood* at Circa Theatre opens with a vibrant display of energy, humor, and topical satire, captivating audiences in Wellywood. Premiering on November 15, 2025, this pantomime features a talented cast that brings Simon Leary and Gavin Rutherford’s script to life. The performance tackles contemporary social issues, including homelessness and wealth disparity, while engaging viewers with its comedic flair.
Set in a city divided between the “wealthies” and the “poories,” the narrative follows Robin Hood’s quest to thwart the corrupt Sheriff of Wellywood. The production embraces the traditional elements of pantomime, including lively dance numbers and sword fights, while infusing sharp political commentary. The script does not spare any local figures, poking fun at prominent names such as Lord David Seymour and new mayor Andrew Little.
Engaging Performances and Dynamic Direction
The visual experience begins with a simple yet effective stage design by Kate Anderson, centering around a raised platform that enhances the action. As the lights dim, the six-member cast bursts onto the stage, introducing the colorful characters of the tale.
Jthan Morgan, who previously starred as the Dame Aunt Peggy Legg in *Treasure Island*, shines as Courtenay Place, a resident eager to escape her rundown neighborhood. Morgan’s performance is marked by expressive comedy, energetic dance, and impressive vocal prowess. Her quick costume changes, designed by Sheila Horton, contribute to the brisk pace of the show.
Natasha McAllister, who co-choreographs the production, impresses with her rendition of Barry Manilow’s *Looks Like We Made It*. Portraying a strong Maid Marian, she showcases her archery skills and stage presence, supporting Robin Hood’s mission. Kathleen Burns brings warmth and charm to the title role, effectively anchoring the performance with her wit.
Jackson Burling stands out as the villainous sheriff, commanding attention with his dynamic presence. His powerful voice and physicality shine through in lively numbers, including a rap segment and a rendition of Robbie Williams’ *Let Me Entertain You*.
Cultural References and Audience Engagement
The script cleverly integrates elements of youth culture, referencing the viral “6-7” TikTok craze and Labubu toys, which resonate with younger audiences. Children had the opportunity to join performers on stage, singing along to *Protest Song*, fostering an interactive atmosphere.
For the first time, the production features a recorded soundtrack instead of live musicians, a change that received mixed reviews. While the timing was generally effective, some felt that the absence of musical director Michael Nicholas Williams was noticeable. At times, the soundtrack overshadowed the performers’ strong vocals, which could have elevated the experience further.
Despite minor drawbacks, *Robin Hood* at Circa Theatre provides a delightful outing for families, combining humor, satire, and high-energy performances. The show runs until January 11, 2026, making it a fitting choice for the holiday season. With its mix of comedy and heartfelt moments, it promises to leave a lasting impression on audiences in Wellywood and beyond.
