Councillor Takes Stage in Musical Comedy, Embraces New Role
Mr. Fraser, a local councillor and tractor salesman, is set to take on a new role as a PE teacher in the musical production of Alphabet Soup, which opens on November 14, 2023, at the Gore Town & Country Stadium. This marks his second theatre production, following a non-speaking role in Jesus Christ Superstar in 2011.
Reflecting on his past performance, Mr. Fraser humorously noted, “I had to crucify him and everything.” In this upcoming production, he will not only act but also incorporate singing and dancing—areas where he admits to feeling less confident compared to his wife, Cheryl Anderson, who serves as the musical director.
Given the theatre company’s need for “grumpy old men,” Mr. Fraser and fellow actor Jason Harvey decided to step forward for this comedic role. “You do what your wife says,” he quipped, showcasing his playful attitude towards his dual responsibilities as a councillor and performer. Despite initial concerns about public perception regarding his involvement in a light-hearted production, Mr. Fraser expressed his enthusiasm for supporting Gore Musical Theatre, an organization he believes showcases the talent of the local youth.
The cast features notable talent, including Billy Weeks, who recently performed as Fonzie in the theatre’s production of Happy Days, and Taylor Thomson from Lumsden. According to Ms. Anderson, Taylor is a standout performer who excels in singing and dancing, adding significant value to the production.
Mr. Fraser described Alphabet Soup as a whimsical piece set in a school environment, featuring a blend of parents, teachers, and students, with songs and sketches flowing seamlessly together. “I won’t give anything away, but it’s extremely funny,” he said, hinting at the show’s comedic elements.
In a nod to the production’s playful nature, Mr. Fraser mentioned his costume, stating, “I’ve got the shortest pair of shorts you’ve ever seen.” This humorous admission underscores the light-hearted spirit of the show, which aims to entertain audiences with its unique charm.
Performances of Alphabet Soup will take place at 7 PM on November 14, 15, 21, and 22. Tickets are available for $75 per adult or $600 for a table of eight, which includes dinner. Interested attendees can purchase tickets through iTicket.
Mr. Fraser’s involvement in this production not only highlights his personal growth but also emphasizes the importance of community engagement through the arts.
