Ellen DeGeneres Voices Support for Minneapolis Anti-ICE Protests
Ellen DeGeneres has publicly expressed her support for anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) protests taking place in Minneapolis following the recent fatal shooting of local resident Renee Good. In a video shared on Instagram, the 67-year-old comedian and television host conveyed her sadness about the events unfolding in what she referred to as “the happiest city in America.” This statement came in light of the rising tensions surrounding ICE operations in the area.
In her video message, DeGeneres reflected on her connection to Minneapolis, where she filmed her 2024 Netflix special, “Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval.” She stated, “Hey everybody, I just wanted to say, I am so sorry for what is happening in Minneapolis and our country, really, but specifically Minneapolis right now because that’s where I shot my last stand-up special and everybody there couldn’t have been more lovely.”
DeGeneres emphasized her belief that Minneapolis deserved its reputation for happiness, saying, “They say it’s the happiest city in America. And I found that to be true.” She extended her thoughts and prayers to those affected by the tragic incident and expressed pride in the peaceful protests occurring in response.
“I am sorry for anyone who has been hurt just for protesting, for doing what you should be doing,” she added, underscoring the importance of peaceful demonstrations in advocating for change. Her comments resonate with many who are calling for justice and accountability in the wake of Good’s death, which has sparked widespread outrage and mobilization among community members.
The protests have gained momentum as demonstrators demand an end to ICE operations that they argue disproportionately target immigrant communities. The situation has drawn national attention, amplifying calls for reform and increased scrutiny of ICE’s practices.
DeGeneres’s statement reflects a broader trend of public figures becoming increasingly vocal about social justice issues, particularly those affecting marginalized groups. As the protests continue, the dialogue surrounding immigration enforcement and community safety remains at the forefront of national conversations.
The events in Minneapolis highlight a critical moment for activists and allies alike, as they strive for meaningful change in a climate that often seems resistant to it. DeGeneres’s support adds a notable voice to the movement, encouraging others to join in solidarity for those advocating for justice.
